Backpack Explorers: Preschool Learning Discovery

Preschoolers ages 3-4 engage their senses on an adventure created just for them and their parents. Go on a backpack journey throughout the Museum, observe nature, animals, science, and create art. Take home activities based on your discoveries. New themes each week.

Museum members: $10 per child.

Non-members: $15 per child, plus admission for accompanying adult.

Four classes($5 discount): Members, $35
Non-members, $55

Animals use many different sounds to talk to each other. Let’s listen to the call of the wild and discover animal sounds together. Bring your howl!

March 1: You Otter Love It!
Learn the mysteries of the river otter and other creatures of the weasel family.

7 and 8 There’s Gold!
Search for gold in our re-created 19th-century placer mine, and take your findings home.

14 and 15 Something’s Fishy
Help feed the fish of the High Desert Museum inside and out. Visit the stream and see how fish thrive in rivers and streams.

21 and 22 Biscuits ‘n’ Butter

Let’s make old-time butter and biscuits like pioneers of the frontier! Come play with all kinds of cool pioneer tools and toys too.

April 4 and 5 Wild Art
Inspired by furry, feathery and scaly friends, you will create your own animal art. Experiment with color and texture while exploring the techniques of artists Van Gogh and Picasso.

11 and 12  I Dig Archeology
Take a trip to life underground. The earth has many stories to tell and we are going to find out about some of them. You never know what you can find unless you keep on digging.

25 and 26 Amazing Metamorphosis
Wouldn’t it be fun to change your shape and color? Some animals can do just that. Adaptation to one’s environment is the key to survival. Discover how some creatures adapt in amazing ways.

May 2 and 3 Slithering Snakes
Sssss…so you want to move like a snake? Slither this way and that way and learn about these fascinating creatures. Learn how they can eat something that’s bigger than them, and how they shed their skin.

9 and 10 Fly Like An Eagle
These magnificent birds, with a wing span of seven feet, are the kings and queens of the sky. What makes them so strong? How are the males different from the females? Come and find out!

16 and 17 Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl

Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl have lessons to share about taking care of the earth. Let’s see how they reduce, reuse and recycle to care for the natural world.

23 and 24 Frontier Fun
Discover the culture and stories of the High Desert by becoming a pioneer. Play authentic pioneer games and help take care of the ranch cabin.

30 and 31 Exhibit Builders
If you could create any kind of museum or exhibit, what would it be? Let your imagination soar as you build a model exhibit for your art.
