The Problem With Feathers

  • 03.09.18
    6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Trumpeter Swan, Colony Farm Regional Park, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia
Dr. Sievert Rohwer, Professor and Curator of Birds, Emeritus at the University of Washington, will discuss research into the life history problems associated with feathers. Why are juvenile plumages often of terrible quality? Why do so many western migrants depart the West to molt in NW Mexico soon after breeding? Why does it take so long for large birds to replace flight feathers? How do worn feathers affect reproductive success in large birds? Hear how the Burke Museum’s research collection of birds helped Dr. Rohwer and his team uncover some of the answers.
